Lil Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled Unite For ‘I’m on One’ at 2011 BET Awards

Drake Lil Wayne DJ Khaled
It was an out and out hip hop party when Young Money cohorts and fan faves Lil Wayne and Drake bounded on stage with Rick Ross and DJ Khaled to perform ‘I’m On One’ at the 2011 BET Awards. It was the penultimate performance of the show, and while it had enough star power to actually close the BET Awards, that honor was reserved for Beyonce and her satellite performance at Glastonbury in the UK.

Stateside, all factions of hip hop were represented in this onstage collision, from the Southern rap stylings of Weezy, to the nasally and rapid-fire vocal acrobatics of Drake, to the neo-gangsta rap of Rick Ross and anthemic creations of DJ Khaled.
Weezy maybe have been released from jail a while ago and has already embarked on post-jail tours, but he was rocking out like it was his first post-prison performance! He also sported American flag shorts and easily projected the most infectious energy onto the stage. The large-and-in-charge Ross was a bit dapper, cloaked in all black, while Drake looked like a college kid next door, thanks to a black sweatshirt with gold tracing on it.
We were left wondering if Snoop Dogg or Eminem or some other major rap star was going to crash this party. Lots of trade offs of verses and choruses occurred throughout, with Weezy declaring that ‘Nicki Minaj, Drake and Wayne is the best” before parting. Those Young Money kids stick together, don’t they?

Trey Songz, Kelly Rowland Mix ‘Love Faces’ + ‘Motivation’ at the 2011 BET Awards

Trey Songz Kelly Rowland

Trey Songz and Kelly Rowland shared the stage in separate but equal performances at the 2011 BET Awards.
Trey Songz is known for his baby-making music. The singer melted hearts with his rendition of his hit ‘Love Faces,’ where he sang about, well, those “making love faces,” also known as the “O” face to ‘Office Space’ fans.
Songz then ripped off his shirt, going shirtless for the rest of his set — so it was almost makin’ love attire. Almost! His bedroom performance felt too intimate of a moment as he performed this sexified song, but we got through it. We also tried to read his chest tattoo, which was script, but failed. We don’t doubt that whomever he makes ‘Love Faces’ with will be able to read it.
Right after Songz wrapped ‘Love Faces,’ he sang a little of ‘Unusual’ and then introduced Kelly Rowland, who performed her mega hit ‘Motivation.’ Rowland’s pretty face was totally obscured by a big-brimmed black hat. She wore a black pantsuit and let the music and the choreography take center stage, literally. Rowland may sometimes be viewed as the other successful Destiny’s Child member that’s not Beyonce, but she is truly stepping out from behind the Queen B’s shadow. Her new album, ‘Here I Am,’ is on its way.

Songz re-emerged to finish the song with Rowland. He was wearing a shirt and jacket this time.

Cee Lo Takes the 2011 BET Awards Stage Dressed as Patti LaBelle

Cee Lo Green

After honoring Patti LaBelle with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2011 BET Awards, the 67-year-old music icon took the stage to perform a song — sort of. Cee Lo Green was easy to spot, even in disguise, when he grabbed the mic and performed ‘Somebody Loves You Baby’ dressed as LaBelle.
The audience was in stitches when they realized that ‘The Voice‘ coach, Green, was imitating LaBelle in a big, crazy wig and sparkling jacket, which, given, was not too far off the path of his typical attire.
Like he does, Cee Lo was serious about delivering BET Awards viewers with his big voice and sassy style, but all in all, the whole thing was one big joke, given that he carried a can of hairspray and spritzed “his” hair as he sang.
Still, the R&B icon who gave us ‘Lady Marmalade’ and a slew of other hits, looked on from the audience as if she were completely honored to be gently mocked by the ‘Forget You’ hitmaker, and even had tears in her eyes. We did, too, but it wasn’t because we were moved by his hilarious performance!

Big Sean Delivers ‘My Last’ Performance at 2011 BET Awards

Big Sean BET

Big Sean‘s debut album, ‘Finally Famous,’ drops this Tuesday (June 28), and the Detroit rhyme-slinger gave the people a taste of what to expect with a performance of his single ‘My Last’ tonight on the BET Awards.
The Kanye West protegee was joined onstage by Chris Brown, who is featured on the hit track. Big Sean delivered a smooth rendition of the catchy cut, with Brown chiming in with the tune’s hook.
The two artists made their way back and forth on the smoke-filled stage, with Sean sporting a blue blazer and Brown wearing a tuxedo-style jumpsuit.
This was the second time Breezy hit the BET stage tonight. His former performance was a showstopper, featuring his massive hits, ‘Look at Me Now,’ ‘She Ain’t You,’ Deuces,’ and ‘Paper Scissors Rock.’

Big Sean’s performance got the audience up on its feet as they raised their hands up in the air, just like the songs says.

Alicia Keys Premieres ‘Typewriter’; Performs With Bruno Mars, Rick Ross at 2011 BET Awards

Alicia Keys BET

On the cusp of the 10-year anniversary of her ‘Songs in A Minor’ album, Alicia Keys took the stage to make the world premiere of her song ‘Typewriter’ at the 2011 BET Awards, before leading into ‘A Woman’s Worth’ with Bruno Mars and Rick Ross.
Keys delivered the slow and voicey never-before-heard song high above the crowd on a metal platform. ‘Typewriter’ was first first recorded in 1997, but is just now, in 2011, making itself known to the world on the reissue of Keys’ 2001 album.
After a short intro of the song about outdated technology, the New York native stepped down off of her platform to take a seat at the piano where she began to play ‘A Woman’s Worth,’ when out walked Bruno Mars in a clean white suit to join her. Though their duet was nothing short of glorious harmony, it wasn’t complete without the help of Rick Ross, who walked on the stage to deliver a quick rap verse and speed up the performance.
Keys’ wasn’t ready for the curtain to drop without a sampling of the song that made her famous. She played out to the 2001 Grammy-winning hit ‘Fallin” which brought the mood back down from hyped and hip-hoppy to Keys’ signature soulful style, letting the BET Awards viewers — and the world — know that 10 years is the beginning, not the end, for her.

Chris Brown Performs ‘She Ain’t You,’ ‘Deuces’ + More at 2011 BET Awards

Chris Brown BET

At last year’s BET Awards, Chris Brown performed a histrionic tribute to Michael Jackson, which many critics and pop culture watchers thought was over-the-top, with Brown crying as he cavorted on stage. He redeemed himself this year at the 2011 BET Awards with an actual performance medley of his own songs.
Brown opened with ‘She Ain’t You,’ wearing a fancy grey suit with a black button down and Lady Gaga-sized shoulder pads in the blazer and some sort of bulging tumor-shaped appendages at the knees. While Breezy made an unusual fashion statement, he was surrounded by projections of blue waves that turned yellow and orange as he sang and danced.
He then shed the grey attire for all black ensemble that looked easier to shake his groove thang in, and the singer proceeded to drop his fair share of “s” bombs throughout the performance, which also included ‘Deuces,’ ‘Look at Me Now’ and ‘Paper Scissors Rock,’ the latter of which he ended by acrobatically flipping down the stage.
Breezy was not solo, though. He was joined by Busta Rhymes, who also used plenty of, um, colorful language, as well. What do they care, though? They’re getting paper, to borrow a phrase from their own damn song.
The performance was right there in Brown’s wheelhouse, as he was able to dance and show off his moves, instead of forcefully trying to demonstrate to the public that he had a sensitive side by paying a weepy tribute to the King of Pop after his infamous altercation with ex-girlfriend Rihanna. It was definitely an entertaining rebound.

Rick Ross Delivers Ace Hood’s ‘Hustle Hard’ With DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne at the 2011 BET Awards

Rick Ross
Rick Ross took the stage at the 2011 BET Awards to perform the current events Ace Hood hit he’s featured on, ‘Hustle Hard,’ but not without a little help from his friends. One by one, Ross was joined by DJ Khaled, Ace, and Lil Wayne, who each brought a fresh slice to the pie.
Ross, who was sporting a stylish and colorful red ensemble, pumped up the crowd and wore his sunglasses at night with a lengthy intro. But when DJ Khaled and Ace Hood hit the stage, things got hot — literally. Fire lit up the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, which was comfortable for Hood, who rapped his portion shirtless.
Of course, Ross wasn’t to be outdone. When the camera flashed back to the frontman, it was revealed that he too had unbuttoned his shirt, like he did on his recent cover issues of VIBE and GQ.

Amidst bleeped-out lyrics, out walked Weezy rocking his signature white tank and flat-billed cap while effortlessly laying out lines — and Nicki Minaj couldn’t be missed bobbing her head along in the crowd.
Before leaving the stage, Ace Hood took the chance to push his new album, ‘Blood, Sweat, & Tears,’ by letting fans know it will drop Aug. 9. ‘Hustle Hard,’ featuring Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, acts as the premiere single from the record.

Mary J. Blige Kicks Off 2011 BET Awards With Special Guest Anita Baker

Mary J Blige

Mary J. Blige opened the 2011 BET Awards with a medley performance that featured a surprise appearance by veteran soul singer Anita Baker.
Blige, dressed in a skintight white outfit, started with her ’90s hits ‘Mary Jane’ and ‘Real Love,’ as she strutted around the stage with a youthful energy.
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul paused for a moment to introduce the next tune, saying “This song I’m about to sing — if it was never made, I would not be here tonight.” She then started singing Anita Baker’s ‘Caught Up in the Rapture’ before being joined onstage by none other than Baker herself. The two duetted on the remainder of the song, after which MJB called Baker her “angel.”
It was then time for a world premiere of the new song ‘It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over,’ during which she was accompanied by Jadakiss and DJ Khaled. The tune was a club banger that featured Jadakiss delivering a few rap verses and Khaled serving as hype man. The track is set to surface on Khaled’s upcoming album, ‘We the Best Forever.’
